미중 무역분쟁 여파로 올해 들어 북미항로에서 중국의 약세, 동남아시아의 강세가 이어지고 있다. 29일 미국 해운조사기관인 피어스에 따르면 3월 한 달간 아시아 18개국에서 미국으로 수출된 컨테이너 물동량은 전년 동월 대비 1% 증가한 121만8834TEU를 기록했다. 2월의 6% 감소에서 한 달 만에 다시 상승세로 돌아섰다. 하지만 점유율 1위인 중국발 화물은 11% 감소한 64만3476TEU에 머물렀다. 주요 품목이 모두 역신장했다. 가구가 14%, 섬유제품이 12%의 두 자릿수 감소세를 보였고 전기기기도 1% 뒷걸음질 쳤다.

2017년 2월, 세계 7위의 국적선사 한진해운이 파산했다. 수출입 화물의 99% 이상을 해상으로 운송하는 우리나라이기에 국내 최대 해운선사의 파산은 큰 충격이었다. 이로 인해 해운산업 매출액이 10조원 이상 감소하는 등 국가 기간산업으로서 우리 경제를 지탱하던 해운산업의 위상은 크게 흔들렸다.

해운업계가 블록체인 기술 도입에 나서면서 종이서류 대신 전자문서로 해상운송 업무의 단절없는 연결 구현을 위한 데이터 표준화 작업에 나섰다. 표준화에 성공한다면 업무에 따르는 시간과 비용을 큰 폭을 줄여 효율성을 극대화 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 그러나 현실적으로는 기관별·국가별로 기술적 인프라가 판이하게 달라 작업이 쉽지 않을 것이라는 부정론도 나오고 있다.
